Männer als Ammen - Frauen als Liebhaber: Cross-gender Casting in der Oper 1600-1800by Kordula KnausEnglish summary: The setting of women's rolls through singing as well as the adoption of masculine parts through female vocalists was a well established practice in the first two centuries of the history of opera. Kordula Knaus analyses this phenomena of cross-gender casting in this volume involving the historical context and sense of awareness. Beginning with the under-representation of women on the opera state in the 17th century the study ranges from the masculine nurses and female singers as youthful lovers to the castrati as prima donnas in the Roman theater and up till the appearance of "trouser rolls" (in which masculine rolls were portrayed by women) in the 18th century. The author addresses the backgrounds of these divisions in casting, the development of stereotypes in cross-gender casting, the musical and representative demands on female and male vocalists as well as the current meaning and perspective of gender.
