The Aristocracy of Norman Englandby Judith A. GreenThis book attempts a more rounded picture of the changes in the ruling elite of England after the Norman conquest, but only where such a picture can be justified from contemporary sources. Therefore topics such as the aristocracy's Norman estates, the great ecclesiastics, the lower social ranks, kinship and marriage are discussed, but much greater detail is given to Norman land settlement, based on the Domesday evidence, and to the relationship of crown and aristocracy, based on charters, chronicles and other sources. Wider issues of the aristocracy's financial, social and religious life are also discussed, where they can be extrapolated from the sources; these include a chapter on the crucial role played by women in the transmission of land. The work is intended to provide a study comparable with those of elites in other periods and countries, in spite of the distinctive nature of the Norman 'takeover' of the ruling classes. Well-produced and written in lucid prose, this is an excellent read. 497p, 14 b/w illus, 1 map, 1 table (Cambridge UP 1997) Browse other Anglo-Norman books |
