Messages from the Past

by Robert Deutsch

Hebrew seal-impressions, or bullae, provide important epigraphic evidence which can identify people, places and events in the Bible. This study publishes 510 bullae, dating from the 8th century to the beginning of the 6th century BC and outlines the background for the manufcture, iconography, inscriptions and use of bullae along with a discussion of relevant biblical evidence. Includes a catalogue of all material published to date held in public or private collections and 109 hitherto unpublished bullae which are held in the Shlomo Moussaieff Collection in London. Includes indexes and plates, illustrating the letters and iconography. 205p, many b/w figs, 16 b/w pls, 1 col pl (Archaeological Center 1999)
