Bates, DavidAn illustrated edition of Bates' accessible and straightforward biography of William, first published in 1989. A thematic introductory discussion, which asks why Normandy is always willing to celebrate William when England is not, is followed by a chronological investigation of events. The Conquest is only one part of the book. Bates argues that William, `an extremely effective ruler, who was not an especially appealing man', ruled all of his territories in a manner typical of 11th-century warrior chieftains; he was brutal, corrupt, shameless and remarkable. This book is now available in a smaller paperback edition which does not have the 2002 edition's colour plate section. 287p, 45 b/w pls, (1989, Tempus 2002, new Pb edn 2004) Browse other Anglo-Norman books |
