The Cobannus Hoard. Gallo-Roman Bronzes and the Process of Romanization

by John Pollini

The bronze objects comrpising the Cobannus hoard are divided between the J Paul Getty Museum and the Shelby White-Leon Levy Collection but they are here brought together for the first time. Pollini presents a detailed study of the eight bronzes that were found before World War II between Annecy and Annemasse, East Central Gaul. This hoard of high artistic quality consisted of two busts of male adolescents, a figure of a warrior-god, a large money chest, two statuettes of an Ares/Mars-type figure, a figure of a stag and an inscribed pail. Pollini goes on to analyse the inscriptions of the bronzes that are associated with Cobannus, thought to have been part of the Imperial cult with worship centred on central Gaul. Other contextual evidence is also discussed. 103p, 117 b/w pls, 2 maps (Monumenta Graeca et Romana 9, Brill 2002)
