Journal of Roman Pottery Studies, Volume 10: Amphorae in Britain and the Western Empireedited by J PlouviezThis volume of the JRPS focuses on amphorae, the great long-distance travellers of the Roman pottery world. Amphorae were used to carry commodities such as wine, olive oil and fish-sauce throughout the Empire, from the Mediterranean to its furthest extremities. These papers, originally given at a conference at the Museum of London, discuss the finds of amphorae from Crete, Italy, Spain and France, in Britain and in the Gallic and Germanic provinces. Other papers consider the trade implications of the finds, and the re-use of amphorae after their initial use. Finally, there is a review of Samian ware studies in the past ten years and a paper on Lyon ware in Britain. 224p, 77 b/w figs (Oxbow Books for The Study Group for Romano-British Pottery 2003) Related Titles
