World of Juba II and Kleopatra Selene

Roller, Duane W.

Juba II (48 BC-AD 23/24) ruled as client king of Mauretania for fifty years, married to the sole surviving daughter of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. He was an intellectual, author of numerous writings on history, geography and science, and almost solely responsible for the romanisation of North Africa. This detailed study, accompanied by copious notes, extracts from contemporary sources (in Latin with English translation) and photographs of archaeological sites and places, provides an interesting biography of this most Roman of Africans. Sections discuss Roman Numidia and Mauretania, Juba's ancestry and childhood, his wife who bridged two worlds, court culture and Libya, of which Kleopatra was queen in name. Roller also considers Juba's writings and his personal participation in Caesar's great Eastern expedition. Appendices list Juba's published works, the family connections of Juba and Kleopatra and the discuss the nature of client kingship. 335p, b/w illus (Routledge 2003)
