Elizabeth I: Her Life in Lettersby Felix PryorPublished to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Elizabeth I's death in 1603, this book presents sixty letters that were written either by Elizabeth (or by a third party for her to sign) or to her. The earliest letter was written by Elizabeth at the age of eleven to her father Henry VIII, the latest to James VI of Scotland, written in her 70th years. Other documents include letters to her brother Edward VI, her siste Mary, the Duke of Anjou, as well as warrants for Ralegh and the Earl of Essex and various speeches. Letters received from Ivan the Terrible, the Earl of Essec, Francis Bacon, Rudolph II and Edmund Spenser, amongst others, are also included. Each letter is accompanied by a commentary on the document and a discussion of its historical context, as well as a translation where appropriate. This `rummage' through Elizabeth's correspondence and state papers provides interesting insights into her relationships, political problems and intrigues, and how she dealt with issues of a religious and marital nature, overseas exploration and concerns over the succession. 144p, many col pls (The British LIbrary 2003) Related Titles
