Seafaring in Ancient Egypt

Fabre, David

When one thinks of ancient Egypt, it is normally images of the Nile and desert that come to mind, but both the Mediterranean and Red Sea played a significant role in the lives of many Egyptians and in the policies of their rulers. Egyptians were also great sailors, travelling to lands at the very limit of ancient knowledge. This richly illustrated study explores the maritime history of ancient Egypt as well as the remains that are now being discovered beneath the sea. Clearly structured sections draw on images of artworks and artefacts as well as numerous extracts from ancient sources to discuss Egyptian navigation, ports, ships and their crews, as well as traders, merchants and messengers. Finally, David Fabre considers the role of the sea in Egyptian religion and superstition and their contact with the superstition of the Phoenicians, perhaps the greatest of all ancient seafarers. The book ends with a glossary and a list of sources. 278p, many col and b/w pls (Periplus 2004/2005)
