Routledge Companion to Medieval warfareBradbury, JimThis well-presented book takes the large, daunting subject of medieval warfare and divides it into concise, manageable sections. The result is a useful and very readable reference for anyone with an interest in the subject, including general readers. The bulk of the companion is divided into three parts, the first of which comprises an A-Z of generals and leaders, including the first Muslim generals, Anglo-Saxon kings, Vikings, emperors, bishops, nobles and rebels. The second section, Military events, considers each period in turn, such as the end of the Romans, the Vikings, Norman Conquests and crusades. A historical discussion of each period is followed by a gazetteer of battles and sieges. In Military topics, the third section, Jim Bradbury considers the significance of such themes as arms and armour, heraldry, armies, castles and sieges, navies and military orders, followed by an A-Z of relevant terms. The companion concludes with discussions of primary and secondary sources, suggestions for further reading, genealogical pedigrees, maps and a chronology. 381p, b/w figs, maps (Routledge 2004) Browse other Medieval Warfare books |
