Am Anfang war die Stadt: Archäologische Spurensuche im mittelalterlichen Hannoversch Münden

by Andrea Bulla

This examination of the ways in which the infrastructure of medieval German towns evolved is based on the analysis of archaeological remains in the town of Hann. Münden in Lower Saxony. Large scale excavations, carried out between 1996 and 1999, have revealed important evidence for both the pre-urban and urban history of the town. Discoveries included the 13th-century town wall, the market place and roads, a sewer system, 12th-century pit houses, a late 12th-century basilica with burials, a Romanesque town hall and industrial remains. Each type of evidence, inluding the finds, is described and discussed in turn. German text, English summary. 144p, 10 b/w pls, b/w illus (BAN 7, VML 2004)
