Medieval Clothing and Textiles I

Netherton, Robin

The academic study of medieval clothing has grown to such an extent that it now merits a new annual volume; this is the first edition. Aiming to cover both social and technological aspects of clothing and textiles, it presents ten scholarly papers which draw on archaeological, iconographic and documentary evidence as well as the `fruits of experiments'. Encompassing the Anglo-Saxon to late medieval period and much of Europe, the papers consider Anglo-Saxon embroidery, imagery in the Exeter Book, the dress of Cnut and his wife, the type of mantle favoured by Icelandic slayers, mdieval fulling, references to clothing (and clothing impropriety) in the register of the Archbishop of Rouen, and the regulation of clerical dress. Contributors also explore the function of the tippet (surely one of the most inconvenient elements of medieval fashion) and the nature of the veil worn by Giovanni Cenami in the famous 15th-century Jan van Eyck painting. Illustrations and tables throughout. 185p, b/w ilus, tbs (Boydell 2005)
