Illumination from Book of Hoursby Janet BackhouseBooks of Hours were produced in their thousands in the medieval period, often at great cost to an individual. However, as a status and religious symbol they were an important object to own. This small format book includes and introduction by Janet Backhouse to the origins and history of Books of Hours, the different types produced and their patrons, before she moves on to take a look at the collection in the British Library. The main body of the book is taken up by 140 colour illustrations reflecting the diversity of types and the ambitious artistic schemes that were part of many, though not all, Books of Hours. 159p, 140 col illus (British Library 2004) Browse other Medieval Art books |
