Prehistoric Journeys

edited by Vicki Cummings and Robert Johnston

This collection of thirteen papers focuses on what it meant to be 'on the move' at different times in prehistory. Ideas of journeys and travel are integral to many traditions of interpreting the prehistoric archaeological record. Travel was after all the driving force behind the formation and transformation of identity. How ironic it is that this feature of prehistory has been so overlooked when the ancient world's 'discovery' in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries occurred primarily as the result of travel. The contributors to this volume see journeys as an integral part of prehistoric life - socially meaningful - which must be understood within their (pre)historic contexts. 152p (Oxbow Books 2007)

Review Quote

"If you thought that archaeologists had already packed a neat set of ideas about prehistoric movements into a conceptual suitcase that could be taken to any theoretical destination and hung up for use, then Prehistoric Journeys takes that pack out of your grasp as fast as any third-world baggage thief.. blazes a trail that transcends received narrow notions of place, site, monument, and landscape."

Bob Trubshaw
Time and Mind, vol 3, No. 1 (March 2010)
