Circled with Stone: Exeter's City Walls, 1485-1660by Mark StoyleIn the early modern period Exeter was a wealthy, thriving city and trade centre located in a strategic position in the south-west, factors which also made it vulnerable to attack. Between 1485 and 1600 Exeter saw five major sieges and several smaller invasions and it is no surprise that the fortifications that had surrounded the city since the Roman period were improved and strengthened. This book tells the history of these defences in the Tudor and Early Stuart period and describes the characteristics and function of the walls, towers and gates baed on up-to-date archaeological and historical evidence. The second part presents excerpts from the civic archives of the city including documents referring to expenditure on the fortifications and its maintenance and repair. Well illustrated throughout. 231p, 16 figs, 26 b/w and col pls, 8 maps (Exeter UP 2003) Browse other Medieval Fortifications books Browse other Medieval Towns books |
