The Encyclopedia of the Egyptian Pharaohs, Volume I: Predynastic to the Twentieth Dynasty (3300-1069 BC)by Darrell D. BakerA comprehensive guide to the known rulers of ancient Egypt from 3300-1069 B.C. Includes an alphabetized list of all known pharaohs through the Twentieth Dynasty. Each entry includes: a brief biography of the reign; tomb location and number (if known); location of known mummies; chief consorts (if known); hieroglyphs and transliterations of each form of the pharaoh's name; pertinent biographical references. In addition, the encyclopedia contains a glossary of commonly-used terms, an index of Grecianized names and variant spellings, a list of apocryphal kings of the Fourteenth Dynasty, the royal titulary, and a chronological king list by dynasty. 587p (Bannerstone Press 2008) Review Quotes"...what Darrell Baker has achieved in his Encyclopedia of the Egyptian Pharaohs is unprecedented [...] a unique and crucial contribution to the field. The scope and ambition of this work is matched by its thoroughness and meticulous attention to detail. [This book] is a new classic in the field of Egyptology and a crucial addition to all Egyptological libraries." J.M. Adams "Baker... offers a trove of information in this volume. Each entry lists the various names (and cartouches) of the kings (Horus, nomen, Two Ladies, Golden Falcon), length of reign, tomb location (if known), mummy (if known), consorts, the king's name as it appeared on Manetho's list, and any variant names. A bibliography appears at the end of each entry; there is an extensive bibliography at the end of the book. This is the only volume that gathers the scattered information on each king, in one case clearing up a misconception that confuses even some experts. Summing Up: Highly Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through faculty/researchers; general readers." M.W. Handis "This is one book that I know will be well used and is, therefore, an absolute must for any serious student as an ideal starting point and reference work."
