Harald HardradaMarsden, JohnA straightfoward narrative biography of a far from straightfoward career. Harald Sigurdsson (the 'Hardrada' came long after his death) was as John Marsden points out highly unusual in that he was one of the few professional soldiers of his age (and this was an age of almost incessant warfare). Following closely the structure of Snorri Sturlson's Heimskringla, Marsden traces Harald's career from the death of his half-brother St. Olaf at the battle of Stiklestad through stints as a mercenary in Kiev and Constantinople to the Norwegian throne and eventual defeat and death at Stamford bridge. 242p b/w pls (Sutton 2007) Browse other Medieval History books |
