Archaeology: The Conceptual ChallengeInsoll, TimothyThis book, the latest in the Debates in Archaeology series aims to correct the "imposition of the present on the past". Insoll sees both postmodern and positivist archaeology as unhelpful in promoting specialisation at the expense of a comprehensive critical approach. The book uses a number of methods to look at how our own culture produces conceptual challenges with relation to the past - what, for example, is the significance of colour or movement in the past given the garish hustle and bustle of our own world. Linguistic philosophy and Wittgenstein loom large, but Insoll is keen to defend himself against charges of postmodernism - indeed "on the contrary, facts exist", and the book ultimate provides pointers for constructive steps foward. 144p (Duckworth 2007) Browse other Theory books |
