The Gough Map: The Earliest Road Map of Great Britain?

by Nick Millea

Superbly illustrated in full colour, and with a fold out print of the map this book takes a look at one of the Bodleian's most prized holdings. The 650 year old Gough map is remarkable for the thin red lines which snake across its surface, which almost certainly represent the major routes and roads of Britain. It has inadequacies as a road atlas - some settlements, York in particular don't seem to be linked to anywhere, but the map in general shows an understanding of topography far in advance of earlier efforts. The text examines the debate surrounding the map, and shows how digital technology has proved the map to be far more accurate than one might at first think. 95p col illus t/out (Bodleian Library 2007)
