Floods of the Tiber in Ancient RomeAldrete, Gregory S.Rome, despite it's extraordinary size and obvious sophistication was located squarely on a floodplain, and large-scale flooding was common enough in Ancient times to have been barely remarkable. It wasn't just the poorer districts, either - the forum itself was regularly under water! This book examines the evidence for flooding in Ancient Rome, and for contemporary responses to it, including drainage systems and flood barriers, as well as the way that attitudes to rivers and water were affected, and how this was born out in religious practice. Interestingly Aldrete concludes that the Romans had both the resources and the know-how to make the city safe from flooding, but chose not to and looks at the reasons for this. 338p (Johns Hopkins 2007) Browse other Rome books |
