Theophilus of Alexandriaby Norman RussellTheophilus is at present a somewhat deglected figure among the early church fathers, something which this work seeks to remedy. He is today chiefly remembered for his "deplorable violence" and role in the Origenist controversy and in the downfall of John Chrysostom, which in particular has meant that Constantinople-centric church historians such as Socrates and Sozomen gave him short shrift. Norman Russell, however sets him in the context of his times and shows that in Alexandria at least his staunch orthodoxy and refusal to kow-tow to Constantinople established a reputation as a worthy successor to Athanasius. The book contains a large selection of Theophilus' theological writings, very few of which have hitherto been available in English. 222p (Routledge 2007) Browse other Early Christian books |
