Saints in the Landscape: Heaven and Earth in Religious Dedications

Jones, Graham

The church was the focal point for life in villages, towns and cities in Britain right up to the modern age. This study looks at their dedications asking what they can tell us about the communities that they served. As the maps on which the distribution of different saints names are plotted, dedicating a church was a far from random business, and different saints were closely associated with different hopes, fears and functions of a community. Dr. Jones teases out these meanings and looks at how patterns of dedication changed from the earliest Christianity through the reformation and up to the nineteenth century. 256p col pls (Tempus 2007)
