Beowulf and Lejre

Niles, John D

Historians and Old English scholars have long speculated about the historical basis of the epic Beowulf, and it has often been assumed that the great hall, Heorot, was at Lejre on the Island of Zealand; many other literary sources confirm that this was the seat of the Skjoldung Kings mentioned in Beowulf. Excavations took place at Lejre in 1986-88 and 2004-05, and this is the first publication in English of the important and exciting findings. Three seperate great halls were found on the site, the earliest dating to the 6th century, the assumed date of Beowulf. As well as full excavation reports this book also publishes detailed discussion of the significance of the finds, both from an archaeological perspective, by the original excavators, and from the perspective of Old English scholars. Appendices contain all the other references to the old Danish Kingdom of Lejre in medieval sources. A massively important and exciting book which showcases interdisciplinary research at its very best. 495p col pls b/w illus (Brepols 2007)
