Inchmarnock : An Early Historic Island Monastery and its Archaeological Landscapeby Christopher LoweThe small island of Inchmarnock in the Firth of Clydehas long been considered a likely site of early Dal Riata monasticism. This book reports on an extensive series of surveys and excavations at several sites on the island to identify potential ecclesiastical sites and to "consider how Inchmarnock's inhabitants made use of their island landscape in the medieval and later period and how the island itself related to the wider world". The most impressive finds include the remains of an early monastic settlement, complete with school house, and a substantial assemblage of inscribed slate associated with this. 313p b/w and col illus (Society of Antiquaries of Scotland 2008) Browse other Early Medieval Scotland books Browse other Medieval Monasteries books |
