The Pots and Potters of Assyria: Technology and Organisation of Production, Ceramic Sequence and Vessel Function at Late Bronze Age Tell Sabi Abyad, Syria

by Kim Duistermaat

The Late Bronze Age site of Tell Sabi Abyad in the Balikh valley in northern Syria has been the focus of excavations by the Leiden Museum since 1991. This book offers a detailed decsription of the pottery; it brings together the study of the shape and style of the pottery with its archaeological contexts as well as its technology to provide an understanding of pottery production and use. The large scale of the excavation and the excellent preservation of pottery workshops, kilns and tools provide revealing insights into the production process; the chapter on function and use combines information on shape, capacity, traces of use, ancient depictions of vessels in use and - uniquely - information from two cuneiform texts found at the site. 604p, illustrations throughout. (Papers on Archaeology of the Leiden Museum of Antiquities 4, Brepols 2008)

Review Quote

"...Kim Duistermaat’s The Pots and Potters of Assyria:Technology and Organisation of Production, Ceramic Sequence and Vessel Function at Late Bronze Age Tell Sabi Abyad, Syria is an extraordinary volume that goes well beyond traditional approaches to ceramic analysis. This book is thus not only an important resource for specialists focusing on the Late Bronze Age in the Near East, but its clear articulation of various methodologies and analytical techniques makes it equally important for students and scholars specializing in other regions and periods."
