God's Wife, God's Servant: The God's Wife of Amun

This book deals with the title and institution God's Wife of Amun, held by five royal princesses, each the daughter of a king, and which represented an unprecedented extention of royal iconography traditionally reserved for the male ruler. This study explores the development of the title, its historical background and political significance in the context of the de-centralization of royal power under the Libyan and Nubian dynasties. The God's Wife of Amun as in institution was a religious one based in Karnak in Thebes, and Mariam Ayad also explores the religious significance and iconography of the role, and the importance of these royal princesses in securing their fathers' rule in Thebes and mediating with the local nobility. 203p b/w illus (Routledge 2009)
