The Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Lindseyby Kevin LeahyOne of the murkiest regions of the so-called Dark Ages, Lindsey was an independent kingdom until 679, assesed at a similar level to Essex in the Burghal Hideage, but virtually unmentioned in any written sources, and with a relatively meagre archaeological record to boot. In this important book, scholarly yet accessible, Kevin Leahy surveys that archaeology, from cremation and inhumation cemeteries to settlements and the numerous finds picked up by metal detectorists, as well as place name evidence. The latest results from the important site of Flixborough are also analysed as Dr Leahy takes the story past the end of Lindsey's formal independence, showing that Lindsey retained a distinctive identity through the Middle Saxon and Viking periods up to the eleventh century. 224p b/w illus col pls (Tempus 2007) Browse other Anglo-Saxon England books |
