Scottish Odysseys: The Archaeology of Islands

edited by Gordon Noble, Tessa Poller, John Raven and Lucy Verrill

Oxbow says: For centuries islands have been regarded as enigmatic, mysterious and often unique environments, especially in art and literature, but from an archaeological perspective it is imperative that those studying island communities, life and material culture, focus on evidence rather than imagination. This collection of papers, taken from a conference held by The Scottish Archaeological Forum in 2005, takes a variety of approaches to studying the islands of Scotland and Ireland. Such approaches include findings from recent research projects, studies of the impact of island environments on scholars from the Middle Ages to the present, examinations of the relationship between island communities and their archaeology, and analyses of island landscapes, material culture and prehistoric remains. The contributors content with the problem of dealing with the uniquenes of some islands, treating them as microcosms, whilst also acknowledging the wider context, and clearly many of the arguments discussed in this volume have relevance beyond the case studies presented here. 180p, b/w figs and pls (Tempus 2008)
