History Man: The Life of R.G. Collingwoodby Fred InglisR.G. Collingwood was something of a Renaissance figure: a philosopher by trade (he became the Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy at Oxford), author of the influential The Idea of History, he was also an expert in the archaeology of Roman Britain and an artist and musician. The time he spent with the young Arthur Ransome during his childhood in the Lake District also means that he was probably the inspiration for John, the older brother in the Swallows and Amazons books. Fred Inglis' thoughtful and fascinating biography considers his intellectual development and academic career alongside his idyllic upbringing and his turbulent romatic life. 400pp. 16 halftone illus.
