Scotland's Parliament Site and the Canongate: Archaeology and Historyby the Holyrood Archaeology Project TeamThis hefty report details the excavations which took place at the site of the new Scottish Parliament building in Edinburgh. They revealed a nine hundred year settlement history beginning with the creation of the burgh of Canongate by Holyrood Abbey in the 12th century. The area became a popular one for aristocratic townhouses in the early modern period, becoming an industrial slum in the nineteenth century. The book presents archaeological evidence from all of these developments alongside historical work on the changes which the area saw. In addition there is an extensive profile of the architecture of Queensbury House, a largely intact 17th "urban palace". 306p b/w and col illus (Society of Antiquaries of Scotland 2008) Browse other Medieval Archaeology books Browse other Medieval Scotland books |
