Visiting the Past: A Guide to Finding and Understanding Britain's Archaeology

by Gillian Hovell

A fun and well-presented introductory guide to Britain's past, with a definite emphasis on getting out there and seing it for yourself. The text is organised chronologically with summary histories of the principal periods of British prehistory and history along with details of everyday life, and details of the main monument and artefact types which survive. Each section also contains a selection of sites to visit, which demonstrate key archaeological features of each age. These are not simply the most spectacular monuments, alongside the great castle of Beaumaris, for example, are the ridge and furrow fields at Shuckburgh, although I suspect you'd probably need more than just the book to find many of them. A concluding section advises people on getting more involved through local archaeology societies, but the overall goal of the book is simply to help people to notice more of the past that is everywhere around us. 160p b/w illus col pls (The History Press 2009)
