Packed full of beautiful colour photography of sites and artefacts and with plentiful maps and timelines this book certainly looks great. It examines Empires from throughout the ancient world - New Kingdom Egypt, the Hittites, Assyria and Babylonia, the Achaemenids, the Athenian Empire, the Hellenistic Kingdoms, the Parthians and Sasanians, the Romans, the Empires of South Asia and of China. The focus on empires provides an excellent linking thread and prevents the book from becoming simply another "illustrated introduction to...", with considered comment on the structures, machinery, administration and culture of the various empires, and how they viewed legitimised and maintained their power. There is also a highly distinguished cast of contributors: Alastair Blanshard; Trevor Bryce; Robin Coningham; W.J.F.
