A History of Lincoln

by Richard Gurnham

A city of national importance during the Middle Ages, and again during the 19th century, Lincoln has been the subject of extensive recent archaeological work (much of it published by Oxbow), which has been taken into account in this well-written new history. Gurnham traces the fortunes of the city from Iron Age settlement through its military role in the Roman period to capital of Anglo-Saxon Lindsey, and onward to the seat of one of the chief bishoprics of the Middle Ages, and a centre of trade and industry. Alongside the historical events the major buildings are discussed, including the castle, cathedral and bishops palace, before Gurnham takes the story through the city's extended early modern slump, prior to its nineteenth century reinvigoration as a centre of engineering. 212p b/w illus (Phillimore 2009)
