Having joined forces with Casemate Publishers in December 2011, our distribution service has gone from strength to strength.  This new partnership enables us to draw on resources and expertise across the group and the combined skills and efforts of both teams extend the reach of our clients’ content benefitting from the fresh new ideas that both groups are able to offer.  Working together with Casemate has allowed us to develop new markets, from sales to institutions, library suppliers, and book clubs, to working with specialist booksellers, to increasing our presence at exhibitions and conferences. 

Proven Sales Success

Our sales force of in-house salaried representatives, as well as our extensive network of freelance sales reps, work tirelessly to take your titles to trade customers.  All major wholesale and retail customers receive individualized attention from our sales staff with a large number of accounts personally visited multiple times per year.  This means that all our clients’ books are given extensive exposure at both large and small independents, chain stores, museums, galleries, libraries, and wholesalers, all of which result in greater book sales.  Our reps are always looking for new trade avenues in which your books can be sold and work diligently to further their scope and effort. 

Expert Fulfilment

Casemate Academic prides themselves on excellent turnaround time, shipping close to 100% of all orders within 48 hours and very often within 24.  We have recently moved the books into third party warehousing to further improve this turnaround time.  The books are housed in a professional, insured warehouse and clients receive monthly sales figures and inventory reports.  Using a third party for warehousing and dispatching orders enables us to concentrate all our activity on marketing and selling leading, in turn, to increased sales of your books. 

Conferences & Exhibitions

Face-to-face meetings are always best and we have a substantial calendar of conferences, shows, and conventions. We support these with conference pack inserts and offers to conference mailing lists both at meetings we are attending and those we are not. 

As well as specialist meetings we exhibit at BookExpo America, the London Book Fair, the Frankfurt Book Fair, and at the midwinter American Library Association show.  We also participate in several digital publishing book conferences, enabling us to increase the visibility of your books before key decision makers.  Between Casemate Academic and Oxbow Books more than 30 conferences a year are attended in the UK, the USA, and continental Europe.  In addition, we are able to take advantage of Casemate’s show schedule and any relevant titles are also displayed at shows they attend.

Direct to Consumer Marketing

Direct to consumer marketing is at the heart of Casemate Academic, and those personal relationships with individuals often last many years and are the bedrock of good sales.  Our extensive database of active individual customers allows us to send subject-specific targeted marketing both digitally and through print.  In addition to the twice yearly trade catalogues, both sides of the company are dedicated to catalogues whose primary readership is individuals and institutes.  The Oxbow Book News goes out to 12,000 active customers three times a year, with the David Brown Book News going out to 8,000 active customers biannually.  As well as this, subject-specific print mailings and leaflets are produced throughout the year and we send targeted emails to an interested audience. 

We are launching a new website with improved consumer functionality and navigation as well as more effective search engine optimization, enabling your books to be more discoverable not only on the website itself, but on various search engines.  This website also allows us to sell your eBooks direct to the consumer providing a further avenue of revenue.

Digital Distribution

Casemate has been a trailblazer in getting on board with the “digital revolution” and we are able to offer that capability to Oxbow and Casemate Academic distribution clients.  We have a dedicated staff working on digital distribution. 

Avoiding the trap of working with aggregators, we have established direct supply contracts with all the available e-reader companies: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Apple, Waterstone, Google, and Kobo to name a few.  Furthermore, we have reached out beyond the regular book trade and are now also working closely with leading library supply companies such as Overdrive (the largest UK library eBook distributor), eBrary, Baker and Taylor, Ingram, Gardners, Bertrams to bring our books to market in this new format.  The result is we supply eBooks to approximately 80 vendors worldwide. 

The sales growth we have seen has been phenomenal and has led to increased visibility and sales not only for eBook editions, but for print editions as well.

After mastering the conversion process, we now outsource it.  The real key to growth does not lie within the conversion; it is a combination of marketing and the tailoring of metadata to the specific requirements of each customer that is important.  On these fronts we have significant experience which has translated into very strong sales, and we can offer you these services so that you too may reach this fast growing market.

About Oxbow Books & Casemate Academic

Founded by David Brown in 1983, Oxbow Books was originally set up in order to distribute the publications of the Oxford University Committee of Archaeology.  It was soon decided that the business should expand in this area and sell other books on archaeology, both in terms of straightforward retail sales and distribution.  Through its quarterly Book News, Oxbow sold books to customers worldwide.

In 1991, the business expanded to North America and the David Brown Book Company was founded to handle sales in the US and Canada.  In the same year, Oxbow Books began publishing its own material in the UK. 

Over the years, Oxbow Books has continued to flourish as a retail seller, publisher and distributor. The David Brown Book Company has also grown to be one of the top independent academic distributors in North America, with over 100 distributed clients.

As well as continuing to have great success in our ‘core’ subject areas, we now distribute titles in Religious Studies, Theology, Modern History, Language and Literature and much more. We dedicate ourselves to providing the best distribution service we can, by investing time and effort in exploring and instigating the best possible methods to sell all of our content.
