Captains and admirals, scientists and explorers, shipbuilders and geographers: they all played an important role in world history at the time of the great sailing ships (1750-1830). Although Nelson and his band of brothers are well-known, the respective counterparts like the staff of the French, Spanish and Russian Navy are almost untreated - not to mention the Barbary States of North Africa or the Ottoman-Turkish Navy at the end of the 18th century. Josef Johannes Schmid focusses on a selection of famous maritime personalities, who could not live without the sea, and relates them to each other.
