Each Christmas, churches throughout the world celebrate the birth of Jesus through readings, carols, and nativity plays. A major feature of these events is that they are said to be fulfilments of Scripture. However, these claims raise a number of questions today.
Steve Moyise takes a thematic approach to these questions, looking at the claims that Jesus was preceded by a forerunner (chapter 1) and was not only a descendant of David (like Joseph and many others) but was the promised “son of David” (chapter 2). He then looks at the question of whether Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, flight and return from Egypt, and settling in Nazareth are credible as historical events and whether they can be understood as fulfilments of Scripture (chapters 3–4).
This is an important new work that will be fascinating even to those who do not celebrate Christmas.
