A study of the very beginnings of state formation in Egypt during the Naqada I and early Naqada II periods, looking at changes involving the private ownership of property, craft specialization, the emergence of an elite involving great privileges and power. A number of examples from other parts of the world are analysed to provide comparative models for the rise of social complexity and hereditary chiefdoms in predynastic Upper Egypt. Spanish text.
