Since the mid nineteenth century the southeastern hill of Jerusalem has been recognised as its most ancient part, and identified as the Biblical City of David. The story of excavation and research on the site is as colourful and fascinating as this illustrious past would suggest, with no fewer than 14 archaeological expeditions having worked there. In this well illustrated book Ronny Reich narrates the history of the excavations, making accessible to the general reader 150 years of research and controversy, as well as the spectacular finds suc as the ancient water systems of the Siloam tunnel and Warren's shaft, and the Theodotus and Siloam inscriptions. The second half of the book synthesises these findings into a chronological survey of the development of the ancient city.
