The astrological and apocalyptic writings of the renowned cardinal and scholar Pierre d'Ailly (1350-1420) had an important influence on the voyages of Christopher Columbus, and illustrate the complex relationship between astrology, science and theology in the later Middle Ages. Through an examination of d'Ailly's letters, sermons, and philosophical, astrological and theological treatises this book reveals the medieval attitude to astrology, the development of d'Ailly's thought on the stars, and his attitude to the Great Schism and the coming of the Apocalypse. This is the first major work to treat d'Ailly's writings within the wider context of contemporary intellectual turmoil.
