Around the Hearth

Details

The ancient Etruscan metropolis of Caere was at the forefront of ceramic production in the 7th and 6th centuries BC. This detailed study focuses on one particular type of ceramic stamped impasto ware, the brazier, which performed a domestic, funerary and votive role within Caeretan society. The catalogue of 350 exaples is arranged thematically according to the subject of the low-relief decorative scheme applied to the rim and includes animal processions, hunting scenes, Greek myths, chariots and horsemen and the Caeretan banquet. Pieraccini also presents an excellent assessment of the shape, function, decoration, iconography, chronology, distribution and workshops associated with these braziers and an interpretation of the role of these portable hearths in everyday life as the focus for warmth and light, and in funerary ritual. Introduction in Italian and English by Francesca R Serra Ridgway.
