Details
A detailed study of painted tombs from the Italian regions of Campania and Sannio (to the northeast). It includes a catalogue of the tombs and their contents followed by a typology and discussion of the decorative schemes and the motifs employed. The third section explores the iconography, with a discussion of the men and women depicted and other miscellaneous scenes and animals. All the evidence is brought together in a reconstruction of burial types, rites and the types of grave goods deposited in tombs within different cities and areas, and a general discussion of the development of decorated tombs through time and the possible social, political and economic reasons for the changes seen.
