Details
This volume is the second to report on the `intense and systematic' survey on and around the peak of Vrokastro, the site of a Middle and Late Minoan settlement. However, the scope of this book is much wider, providing a detailed analysis of the settlment history of the region from the late Neolithic through to the 20th century based on archaeological and material evidence. Supported by specialist contributions throughout, Barbara Hayden discusses the geography, climate and vegetation of the Vrokastro area and the types of settlement and cultures that can be found there before considering the evidence for each period in turn. Following extensive treatment of each phase of Minoan occupation, the book examines the settlements and organisation of the region during Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman periods, considering such matters as land use, trade, architecture, religious and domestic centres and contact between areas. Additional data is presented on the enclosed CD.
