A concise introduction to the fortified citadels of the Mycenaeans built in the 2nd millennium BC. Regarded as both an expression of power and authority, as well as defensive structures, Nic Fields discusses where they were located, how they were designed and built, extended and maintained. With lots of photographs of the excavated remains of these sites, with superb reconstruction drawings by Donato Spedaliere, he examines how the Mycenaeans adapted the local terrain and added to the natural defence of sites with large walls and a complex of gateways, entrances, courts, bastions and so on.
