This study reconsiders the evidence used to support various hypothese concerning the taxation system of the Mycenaean kingdoms, focusing in particular on Pylos in Messenia (western Greece). Evidence from the Linear B tablets is presented and re-evaluated in light of the theories put forward by M Lejeune, J-P Olivier, F Wyatt, C Shelmerdine and P de Fidio. These theories on the relationship between the palace and its district, and methods of taxation, are critiqued in detail and the role of the textual data used to support their arguments is clarified and judged.
