Examines the arts and how we relate to them in the light of evolutionary theory, arguing that art and aesthetic appreciation are both universal and instinctive. The approach is predominantly philosophically grounded, connecting modern aesthetic theories with cognitive science, in particular the work of Stephen Pinker, and examining ideas such as genius and kitsch, whilst arguing that art is a characteristic which plays a part in natural selection.
