This book presents a detailed study of the iconography of the famous Gotland picture stones. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the motifs of the corpus of 102 stones is carried out, and the motifs organised into a typology. The symbolism in particular of disc and ship motifs, in particular, is investigated further. Includes a complete catalogue of the picture stones. German text.
