This study investigates the procurement and supply of silex by Early and Middle Neolithic settlements in western Franconia (northern Bavaria). Data from 12 early and 13 middle Neolithic inventories (totaling 4328 finds) are analysed, and a major change in supply systems during the two phases identified. While the earlier inventories are dominated by Rijckholt and Baltic flint and Jurassic chert, their percentage decreasing with increasing distance from the extraction site, the Middle Neolithic sees the appearance and dominance of banded tabular chert from Abendberg-Arnhofen, probably transported by part-time specialists.
