This is a real labour of love, an enormously detailed commentary on Seneca's famous work, along with text and translation. The De Clementia is addressed to Nero on his accesssion, and advises the new emperor that showing mercy is preferable to punishment; that one should be respected rather than feared. The lengthy introduction sets the work in its historical, literary and philosophical contexts, as well as assessing its influence through to medieval and renaissance times.
