The third and final volume of Richards' translation of Ibn al-Athir runs from 589-629/1193-1231, the years following the death of Saladin. From a frankish perspective the Crusade to Damietta represents the single most prominent event, but for Ibn al-Athir the key themes are the fragmentation of the Islamic states, and the looming danger of the Mongols, who appear for the first time in his history.
