Cassiodorus's Variae have not been issued in translation since 1886. Presented in the form of letters, they are a major source for late Roman government and on the cultural attitudes of the time; and they are a mine of information on the interaction between the Goths and the changing worlds of sixth century Italy, Gaul and Byzantium.
